How to Survive the Season of Perpetual Parties

The holiday season is in full swing, and from now until next year, your calendar is most likely packed with galas, gatherings and more festive fetes. Here are a few tips for dashing from party to party in a one-shouldered lacy cocktail dress—or whatever you’re wearing to make spirits bright.

Holiday party prep
1. One word: borrow. For the company bash, I borrowed this little number from this gal, and Nick raided his dad’s closet and discovered this tie. I find that friends and family members are often happy to lend—’tis the season for giving, after all. Then, you’ll have more dough to spend on gifts (or in my case, Nick’s weird wish list).

2. If the weather outside is frightful, prep your ’do accordingly. For me, that means embracing my natural waves—and enhancing them with a little curling iron action—when the forecast calls for even the slightest chance of a sprinkle. There was a major downpour last weekend, so this umbrella—which is small enough to stash in my clutch—is saving my mane from becoming a nightmare before Christmas.

3. Fake a glow. If you’re showing skin, a little Jergens goes a long way, as do few strategic dabs of highlighter. I love Benefit’s High Beam, which imparts a soft sheen that the company calls “angelic.” Do I hear a “hark”?

4. Save your soles. After teetering around in heels at the first party of the season, my feet were ready for some comfort and joy. I picked up these booties the very next morning (Merry Christmas to me) and will be planning future party outfits around sensible ankle booties and Nick’s favorite flats.

5. Stock up on wine—or at least more wine than usual. A bottle from your favorite winery makes for a fail-proof hostess gift, and you’ll want to have plenty on-hand in the event of unexpected visitors. I also just brought home this scented candle in mulled wine because it smells like two of the best things ever: red vino and Christmas.

I hope you have a magical holiday season. May your days—and party-hoppin’ nights—be merry and bright!

  1. My favorite piece of advice you gave is to borrow clothes for the parties. You know I forget that option. And like you say, there's more money to be had for gifts.
